General Book-Length Manuscript Proposal Submissions
***Proposals only, please; Upon consensus, the Publications Committee will request the full manuscript.***Submission Guidelines for General Book-Length Manuscripts
The Inlandia Institute publishes regionally-focused literature through our Inlandia imprint with Heyday Books, a small publisher with a focus on California and the West. For publication consideration, it is imperative that the manuscript fit Heyday’s mission as well as the Inlandia Institute’s. Heyday publishes books on cultural and natural history, especially native history, and California art and literature. Take a look at their catalog for a better idea of the kinds of books they publish. Titles that the Inlandia Institute has published through our partnership with Heyday Books include the groundbreaking anthologies Inlandia: A Literary Journey through California’s Inland Empire and No Place for a Puritan: The Literature of California’s Deserts, the award-winning Dream Street, and Carlos Cortes’ Rose Hill, “a riveting memoir of cultural crossfire.”
If you think that Heyday Books’ Inlandia Imprint would be an appropriate publisher for your manuscript, please submit a query or proposal electronically.
Be sure to include the following:
- A cover letter introducing yourself and your qualifications
- A one-page description of your project
- A table of contents and list of illustrations, if applicable
- A description of your target audience and why your book will appeal to it
- A sample chapter.
All manuscripts submitted for consideration are vetted by the Publications Committee. The committee meets monthly so please allow up to six months for a complete review and determination. If the committee finds that the manuscript fulfills both Heyday’s and Inlandia’s missions and is of literary merit the manuscript will then be forwarded to Heyday Books who will then make the final determination. All decisions are final.
Occasionally titles are published through a separate Inlandia imprint published directly by the Inlandia Institute. Please do not submit work specifically for this imprint. If the committee determines that the manuscript is suitable for Heyday’s Inlandia imprint and if Heyday declines, the committee will consider publishing it directly. Whether or not Inlandia chooses to pursue such publication for any particular manuscript will depend in large part on currently available resources of the Institute and is in no way a reflection on the quality or marketability of any given manuscript.
